Our History

Initiative for Gender Equality and Development in Africa (IGED-AFRICA), was established in 2011 by three young Ghanaian women who had a strong conviction that the key to attaining democracy and development lies in promoting and attaining of gender equality and human rights and that, the involvement of women and youth in decision making lays a better strategy for national development.

The idea first came to the group in 2009 after engaging in interactive interviews with some Ghanaian women in the context of HIV/AIDS and property rights issues, when it came to the fore that women were challenged with enjoying their basic human rights mainly because they were not empowered and that the Ghanaian society is struck with in-depth discrimination and bias against women and young folks.

It came to the group’s notice that there was still inadequate awareness and little empowerment among women to effectively participate in issues of civil rights; democracy, governance and human rights. It was therefore relevant to setup an organization to specifically engage in these important issues to address the challenge.

IGED-AFRICA seeks to build amongst the human rights, women environment and development movements a platform of well-informed, confident, competent activists and organizations built from bottom up to national, regional and international platforms.
